I’m not one of those women who have strict hair-care regimens. For years, I coasted by with a head massage once a week using virgin coconut oil or Neelibhringadi Thailam from Kottakkal with no hair-packs or special diets to make my fine hair grow thick and black. I chucked the hair conditioner and got a great hair-cut and thought that would be enough for the rest of my life.
And then I arrived at my mid-thirties and my hair-situation turned into a real Situation. Of course, there were many factors that contributed to this. My weekly head massage ritual had turned into a monthly or bi-monthly ritual. I was dealing with a lot of stress at work and my diet was all over the place.
I started using coconut oil again every week but it refused to deliver the kind of satisfactory results I was used to. My fine hair turned scanty and you could see my scalp if I stood under a fluorescent bulb. Damn those changing rooms. This did nothing at all for my self-esteem.
This is when I heard about castor oil. Coming from Kerala, castor oil isn’t something we reach for when dealing with bad hair. However, the friend who suggested it told me how her balding husband had reversed his bald patch within a year of using it religiously. I couldn’t get my hands on the oil fast enough.
Castor oil isn’t glamorous by a long shot – thick and gloopy, it goes on like glue and you have to really rub it in, and put just as much work to wash it out. But, again, it works. And it’s inexpensive to boot. I honestly had nothing to lose, since most of my hair had left my scalp by then.
How I used it:
You can apply castor oil directly to your scalp or dilute it with other oils such as coconut or olive oil at a ratio of 1:3 drops before use. I mixed in a spoon of castor oil with three spoons of coconut oil and applied the required amount to my scalp for an hour. Then I shampooed it off with generous amounts of shampoo. I did this at least twice a week.
I never noticed the change in the amount of hair-fall because honestly, I can’t tell. But within a month of using castor oil, I felt that my hair had become denser and didn’t resemble a bad Donald Trump wig. Then I went shopping for clothes and passed the acid test – fluorescent lights in the changing rooms – with flying colors. I now recommend castor oil to everyone and hence this post.
